Hi, I’m Katie

(and here are some things that interest me to distinguish me from other Katie’s)

As of this class, I’m a senior at UMW double majoring in English: Creative Writing and Communication & Digital Studies. I like to think of myself as quirky and adorkable, and you’ll probably learn that fairly quickly.

I’ve followed Mienar’s tumblr for a few years now. Her artwork is so calming and pleasing to look at, while also being a nice mix of realistic and cartoon styles. Check out her website and hopefully all her work makes you as happy and tranquil as it makes me. I just love being transported into a scene and feel intimately involved in the emotion and ambience of a piece, so the looping gifs Mienar creates never fail to bring me peace.

Next up is a video by one of my favorite YouTubers, kickthepj. I love his storytelling and art style so much, it always inspires me to continue writing and storytelling of my own. Even more, I love him giving a peek of his art process at the end of the video. He does this more in other videos, showing how he went about experimenting and creating what he created, and this perfectly excites the creative monster within me to get out there and MAKE STUFF. PJ is usually wacky and silly but can be contemplative and thoughtful. Both ways he is always creative and inventive. I like to say he’s a British version of the person I’ve always wanted to be.

This artwork I found through a series of links, starting on tumblr and making my way through articles and finally to Reuben Wu’s website. He combines real landscapes with inventive lighting from drones to create places unheard of.

Here is a developing statement Wu gives on the project:

We are overwhelmed everyday by beautiful images of the familiar. I imagine these scenes transformed into undiscovered landscapes which renew our perceptions of our world.

Lux Noctis is “influenced by ideas of planetary exploration, 19th century sublime romantic painting, and science fiction,” all of which are topics I enjoy (especially in combination). I really like the use of real-world locations and altering them to feel other-worldly. Earth is so vast and while we are so interconnected right now, there is yet so much we have yet to see and comprehend.

Runner Up:

I couldn’t leave with just three pieces of art, not without Nathan W Pyle‘s comics. He has some amazing comics that I find extremely entertaining. I also try really hard to be a plant mom and am not the best at it even though I REALLY WANT TO.
